EN 301 549 is the European standard for accessible IT products and services. In large parts it references the WCAG directly, but it goes further and also covers hardware, software, documents and real-time communication. It thereby forms the shared technical basis for legal requirements such as BITV and the European Accessibility Act. It is the reference point against which digital offerings across Europe have to measure up in a consistent way.
When a project goes beyond plain websites, for instance an app or a self-service digital product, we use EN 301 549 as the common yardstick. It ties the national obligations across the EU together under one roof instead of arguing each country from scratch. That keeps you on a solid line even for cross-border undertakings.
Good to know
EN 301 549 is more than just WCAG with an EU stamp. Annex A maps each requirement to concrete user needs, and especially the non-web parts on software and documents are easily overlooked, even though they are decisive for apps and back-office tools.
